Workshop: Weaving (with plastic bags)

Ever wonder what to do with all those plastic grocery bags that accumulate each week? We have a solution! Please join us for a series of weaving workshops that transform them. 

Description: Participants will learn how to make yarn with plastic grocery bags and work with artist, Andrea Vail, to make a woven artwork that will be displayed at Beatties Ford Library.

This free program is family friendly and open to the public. No experience necessary.

No registration necessary. This is an on-going project that will begin on Wednesday and end on Saturday. Participants are welcomed to float in and out as their schedule allows. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

This workshop series is presented as part of The Art of Recycling program; a collaboration between the Arts & Science Council and Mecklenburg County.

Workshop: Empowering with Embroidery, Embroidered sew-on patches (Adults)

Description: Express yourself through colorful patterns, designs, or simplified images, logos, and initials! During this weekend workshop, you will learn basic embroidery stitches to design and begin a sew-on patch – then add your patch to any jacket, bag, canvas sneaker!

Workshop: CREATIVE EMBROIDERED PATCHES(Adults)

Description:  Transform your own colorful pattern, design, image or logo into a wearable sew-on patch using embroidery techniques with alumna artist Andrea Vail. Adults and teenagers are welcome. All materials are provided.

Workshop: Weaving Magic! (Ages 6-8)

Description: Watch the strands come together to create unique art in this class. Students will learn the basics of weaving with yarn and how to embellish their creations with mixed media bits and baubles.

Tenacious Tapestries (Ages 9-12)

Description: If you like collage, sewing, and working collaboratively you'll love our projects combining materials and ideas in unexpected ways. Come work with us to create something fabulous that is more than the sum of its parts!

Each week, campers will explore visual art and design from the Bechtler Museum’s collection through a variety of experimental and exciting art projects. In addition to daily studio projects, students will also visit the Bechtler Museum every day and other cultural attractions and parks in Uptown Charlotte.
